Greer, SC Real Estate
Located in the picturesque foothills of the Upstate region of South Carolina, Greer enjoys a distinguished past, from its days as a hallowed hunting ground for local Cherokees, to its settlement by hardy and adventurous pioneering families in the 1700’s, to the advent of the railroad in the 1800’s. Today, Greer possesses a rare combination of small-town charm with big-city opportunities, attracting a wide variety of businesses and people from across the country and the world.
The area now known as Greer was once part of the “Domain of the Cherokees” prior to the Revolutionary War. In 1777, the area was added to the State of South Carolina. Development toward the birth of the town occurred in 1873 when the Richmond and Danville Air Line Railway (now the CSX Railway) established a line between Atlanta and Charlotte. A station was built on land that belonged to James Manning Greer, and was named Greer’s Station. The first post office was located in the new depot, Greer’s Depot. When the town was incorporated in 1876, it was named Town of Greer’s. One hundred years later, the name was officially changed to the City of Greer without an “s” on the end.
As far back as 1876, when it was known as Greer's Station, Greer, SC was known as a thriving and reliable trading post. These days, and for the past 50 years, Greer has been known as a place where business and industry flourish. Historically an agricultural center and a town with a thriving textiles industry, today Greer's economy includes the headquarters for Michelin, and North America's only BMW manufacturing facility.
However, this bustling burg is not an industry-choked metropolis. Greer is a small city of 20,000 located in one of the most picturesque regions in the Southeast. Home to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and such natural wonders as Raven Cliff Falls and Croft State Park, the Upstate is populated by retirees, professional couples, and young families alike. In Greer, the natural beauty and the diverse environment is mirrored in the variety of attractive homes and properties that are available.
Greer, South Carolina has more than its share of exquisite homes. From classic estate-style homes with winding driveways to sprawling homes on wooded properties, from red-brick townhomes to cozy family bungalows, the Greer real estate market is bursting with choices for all. Greer has the second largest number of new homes for sale in the entire Greenville area. These properties will appreciate an average of 3% per year.
